This book arts project is very special to me. It taught me a lot about pushing myself out of my comfort zone and being vulnerable with my work.
The questions printed on the right side of the piece are intended as a reflection—both for those nearing the end of life and for the living who still have many years ahead. They invite contemplation on mortality, memory, and meaning. Through this work, I sought to explore the internal anatomy of the human body, placing special emphasis on the heart—not just as a biological organ, but as a powerful symbol. Traditionally associated wi th love, loss, and deep emotional experiences, the heart is also our essential source of life. By highlighting its dual role, I aim to challenge and reinterpret our collective perception of what the heart truly represents.
I found inspiration in the entire duration of this project. This contains a poem in particular I came across while in an exhibit in the biennale in Venice and a book from the Hill Memorial Library Archive with a poem, “Without Death,” by Marie Luise Kaschnitz and etchings by Michele Burgess. I’m learning every day to not fear death but accept and appreciate it for what it allows in life.
